Petition sponsored by: The National Center on Sexual Exploitation
HBO executives and Game of Thrones producers have launched the 6th season of a series that turns depictions of prostitution, incest, graphic rape, torture-sex, and sexual violence into mass entertainment.
While proponents of the medieval fantasy series claim that these depictions are intended to reflect harsh reality, they assume it is only possible to address issues like rape by explicitly and salaciously portraying them in nauseating detail. There is nothing educational about feeding an audience obscene and degrading images of abuse, or empowering about the relentless presentation of women as sexual objects.
Critics have described the series as misogynistic, pornographic, exploitative, and sexually violent—and there is little reason to expect this season will be anything different.
Undoubtedly many people will still flock to watch the new episodes of the series, but there is a growing movement opposing the program. This year, you can join this movement by pledging to take stand against the normalization of sexual violence. Together, let's make season 6 the worst ratings season for Game of Thrones yet.
