The Catholic Archdiocese of Los Angeles is holding their annual Religious Education Conference (REC), between March 21st - 24th, 2019.
Astoundingly, the organizers have invited Cardinal Mahony (retired) to give a seminar on how to connect with junior high and high school students!
It beggars belief that the REC organizers would invite Cardinal Mahony, who is known to have covered-up for abuser-priests, to SPEAK on how connect with CHILDREN!
This petition calls for the organizers of the LA Archdiocese REC to disinvite Cardinal Mahony from speaking at the conference with immediate effect.
Given the ongoing sex-abuse scandals and accusations of cover-ups in Church, reaching even to the papacy itself, the Catholic faithful are calling for a halt to this brazen and insulting behavior.
During his 25 year tenure as Cardinal Archbishop of Los Angeles, Mahony purposely concealed from the public his knowledge of priests who had committed sex crimes with youth, transferring the perpetrators after they received counseling only to have them sexually abuse again and again.
And, after the outcome of an investigation, in 2013, Archbishop Gomez publicly censured Mahony, declaring: “Effective immediately, I have informed Cardinal Mahony that he will no longer have any administrative or public duties.”
It is, therefore, unconscionable that the organizers should have invited Mahony to speak at the REC at all. But, it is all-the-more insulting to the faithful that he should be invited to speak about connecting with youth!
In January, the Ruth Institute launched a petition asking Cdl Mahony to withdraw from the conference, but he has not yet done that.
Now, this URGENT petition is asking the organizers to disinvite him.
We are united in our objective to safeguard both minors and the reputation of the Church - and, right now, we need to apply pressure!
And, while we all believe in redemption, this is the wrong place, time and content (about connecting with teens, for goodness sake!), especially coming just on the heels of a failed sex-abuse summit at the Vatican!
By having Cdl Mahony speak at the Conference, the organizers, the Cardinal, himself, and the Church, all appear ignorant, arrogant and tone deaf, and are inviting PROTEST and scorn.

5-19 Connecting Junior High and High School Students with the Volatile Immigration Issues
Many of the Catholic students in our religious education programs, our Catholic schools and our confirmation programs know fellow students whose families have undocumented family members. There is much confusion about this issue especially the regular threats coming from Washington, D.C. against immigrants. This workshop will offer ideas to help integrate this timely topic into our regular curricula dealing with faith formation and our Gospel outreach.
Speaker: Cardinal Roger M. Mahony
Cardinal Roger Mahony led the Los Angeles Archdiocese from 1985 until his retirement in 2011. Born in Hollywood, he was the first native “Angelino” to be elevated to the position of Cardinal. Cardinal Mahony oversaw the design and building of the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels, which was dedicated in 2002, and now serves the total archdiocese of over 5 million Catholics. Since his retirement, Cardinal Mahony has devoted himself to the cause of comprehensive immigration reform on behalf of our immigrant brothers and sisters as well as refugees and displaced persons around the world.
