PETITION: Canonize Navy chaplain Fr. Capodanno for giving his life to save souls

Fr. Vincent Capodanno was among the very best of us, and his heroic offering of his life means he deserves to be declared a saint by the Catholic Church.

The Navy chaplain laid down his life to save souls on the battlefield in Vietnam, giving Marines the Last Rites as they lay dying.

Riddled with bullets while ministering on the front line, Fr. Capodanno's cause for canonization is now being considered by the Vatican.

SIGN: Fr. Capodanno deserves to be canonized, having laid down his life for his friends.

Fr. Capodanno's cause has suffered a setback in recent weeks when a group of theologians recommended the Vatican suspend the process, despite the priest already being made a Servant of God by the Church.

One of the objectors claimed it would be inappropriate to canonize the Navy chaplain due to the military conflict in Ukraine, but this is only consultative advice and the Holy See can nonetheless proceed with raising Fr. Capodanno to the Communion of Saints.

That's why Catholics must speak up to support the Staten Island priest's cause for canonization.

SIGN & SHARE: Fr. Capodanno showed heroic virtue in sacrificing his life to save souls

Fr. Capodanno (38) was killed by 27 machine gun bullets on 4 September 1967 in the Que Son Valley.

Known as the "Grunt Padre", his cause for canonization was opened in 2018 after the miraculous healing of a woman suffering multiple sclerosis.

With a strong devotion to Father Capodanno, the woman asked for his healing intercession and a subsequent MRI showed that the lesions in her brain had disappeared.

The woman attributed this miracule to the Naval Reserve lieutenant's intercession.

SIGN: We pray Fr. Capodanno will be declared a saint

Fr. Capodanno's cause might be the first considered under Pope Francis' "offering of life" category created in 2017 as a path to sainthood, with the traditional paths being martyrdom and dying as a "confessor".

The Dicastery for the Causes of Saints must hear of the faithful's support for Fr. Capodanno's cause.
