Republicans have just introduced a new bill, "Fairness for All", which is as dangerous to free speech and the freedom of religion as the Democrats' "Equality Act".
And, just as with the Democrats' "Equality Act," everything about "Fairness for All" seems purposefully designed to soften-up and dupe a credulous public.
For the following reasons, this petition asks the members of Congress to reject this trojan-horse attack on our freedoms of speech and religion.
In the first instance, just like with the "Equality Act", it's name makes it sound like it's all sweetness and light...about "fairness".
In reality, the "Fairness for All" bill is not about fairness, but about using the law to silence and punish people who do not adhere to the current sexual orthodoxy, i.e., that homosexuality is a genetic condition (even though we know science keeps telling us that there is no such thing as a "gay" gene) and that transgenderism is normal (even though we know that gender dysphoria is a mental disorder).
In the second instance, and most importantly, it does not respect - in law - the belief that there are only two sexes - male and female - and that those two sexes were created for each other.
This means that a person who acts on the belief that there are only two sexes, created for each other, could be subject to legal punishment, for believing and acting on what the vast majority of people have held throughout human history.
In the third instance, "Fairness for All" would elevate "sexual orientation" and "gender identity" to "protected status" under the law. But, crucially, it fails to stipulate how discrimination will be defined.
This glaring omission makes this bill extremely dangerous because the definition of discrimination will likely be arbitrary, and may also be capricious.
In plain English, discrimination will mean whatever a judge wants it to mean.
And, given the current tumultuous social climate, that means that people of faith have a lot to fear.
Therefore, the "Fairness for All" bill is anything but simple "update" of the 1964 Civil Rights Act.
While seeking to provide security in employment and housing to people who identify as homosexuals, or who are gender-confused, House Republicans are pushing extremely dangerous legislation - dangerous to the soul of our American democracy and the principle of majority rule.
This petition is, therefore, calling for all members of Congress to reject this flawed compromise.
