PETITION: Deny Holy Communion to Mark Carney until he publicly repents for promoting abortion

Canon 915 of the Code of Canon Law clearly states:

Those who have been excommunicated or interdicted after the imposition or declaration of the penalty and others obstinately persevering in manifest grave sin are not to be admitted to Holy Communion.

This canon must be applied without exception—especially when a prominent Catholic like Mark Carney publicly, defiantly, and consistently promotes the grave sin of abortion.

Abortion is the deliberate killing of an innocent human being and has been condemned by the Catholic Church from the very beginning. The Catechism of the Catholic Church (CCC 2270) affirms:

Human life must be respected and protected absolutely from the moment of conception.

Late in March, Mark Carney was asked by a reporter:

“Prime Minister Carney, you are a practicing Catholic. You attended church before you visited the Governor General this morning. Do you explicitly support a woman’s right to choose?”

Before the reporter could finish, Carney jumped in:

“Absolutely... I absolutely support a woman’s right to choose, unreservedly, and I will defend it—as the Liberal Party has defended it—proudly and consistently.”

This is a grave scandal. A Catholic who publicly supports the “right” to murder unborn children not only rejects Church teaching but leads others into confusion and error—especially when that person claims to be in full communion with the Church.

SIGN THE PETITION urging Archbishop Marcel Damphousse to uphold Canon Law and refuse Holy Communion to Mark Carney until he publicly repents of his scandalous support for abortion.

In an April 11 interview with the Eternal Word Television Network (EWTN), Bishop William McGrattan, the president of the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops, declared that pro-abortion politicians should not be given Holy Communion—less than a week after Carney received the Eucharist at an Ottawa parish.

“I would say that someone who is in politics and claims to be living according to their faith and making such statements, we see the disconnect, and this is unfortunate with many of our politicians,” McGrattan said.

When asked if this would apply to Carney, who had been seen receiving Holy Communion during a parish livestream, McGrattan replied:

“I think that those pastoral decisions would have to be made by the local bishop,” referring to Archbishop Marcel Damphousse of Ottawa-Cornwall.

“If it is in regard to a very challenging, scandalous position, then that is the responsibility of the bishop, in a pastoral way, to confront and to challenge various politicians in that way,” McGrattan added.

As LifeSiteNews previously reported, Carney was captured on camera receiving Holy Communion on two separate occasions, despite publicly supporting abortion.

On April 6, the livestream of St. Monica’s Parish in Ottawa showed Carney entering the church moments before Mass began. During the homily, Father Michael El-Nacef, a visiting priest, made the Church’s position unmistakably clear:

“Abortion, that’s murder,” he said.

“If we’ve ever fallen into mortal sin, there’s never a reason to receive Holy Communion... We always, always, always have to go to Confession first.”

Despite that warning, Carney approached the altar and received Communion—then left the church immediately without returning to his pew.

On April 18, during Good Friday service at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Hamilton, Carney was again seen receiving the Eucharist in the parish livestream. Notably, he did not present himself for the veneration of the cross, where faithful typically kneel and kiss the crucifix in a solemn act of devotion.

This pattern of behavior cannot be ignored.

Bishop McGrattan has affirmed that Catholic politicians who persistently support abortion should not receive Holy Communion. Pope Benedict XVI (then-Cardinal Ratzinger) also made it clear in a 2004 letter to U.S. bishops: “[When a Catholic] consistently campaigns and votes for permissive abortion laws... his pastor should meet with him... and must refuse to distribute Holy Communion if the person persists in grave sin.”

The Holy Eucharist is the real presence of Jesus Christ. It must not be received by anyone who publicly and obstinately opposes essential moral teachings of the Church.

Denying Holy Communion in such cases is not an act of cruelty—it is an act of charity, both for the soul of the politician and for the spiritual protection of the faithful.

That is why we are calling on Archbishop Marcel Damphousse to act courageously and publicly refuse Holy Communion to Mark Carney until he repents of his grave public sin and aligns himself with the teachings of the Catholic Church.

Please sign this urgent petition and stand up for the unborn, the integrity of the Eucharist, and the truth of our Catholic faith.
