After years of Catholics for Choice’s abortion activism, we are calling on Cardinal McElroy to revoke the use of the title “Catholic” from the organization.
Most recently, Catholics for Choice received abundant attention for a December 1 message on social media, which stated: “This holiday season, remember that Mary had a choice, and you should too.”
This statement follows years of blasphemy and disregard for Church teaching, particularly in their advocacy for abortion, which is undeniably contrary to both natural and divine law.
On its website, Catholics for Choice describes its mission: “Catholics for Choice works in the United States and around the world to ensure that all people have access to safe and affordable reproductive healthcare.”

According to the Catechism of the Catholic Church, “Since the first century the Church has affirmed the moral evil of every procured abortion. This teaching has not changed and remains unchangeable. Direct abortion, that is to say, abortion willed either as an end or a means, is gravely contrary to the moral law.”
The Church’s condemnation of abortion – the direct killing of an innocent unborn child – as always gravely immoral is “based upon the natural law and upon the written Word of God, is transmitted by the Church’s Tradition and taught by the ordinary and universal Magisterium,” as Pope St. John Paul II declared in Evangelium Vitae.
The organization has been publicly disavowed by Church leaders in the past, yet has continued to push its evil ideas and call itself “Catholic.”

As Canon 216 of the 1983 Code of Canon Law states, “No undertaking is to claim the name Catholic without the consent of competent ecclesiastical authority.”
This canon has even been invoked by bishops cracking down on organizations who upheld Church teaching.
For example, in 2011, Michael Voris’ Church Militant, at the time called Real Catholic TV, was asked by the Diocese of Detroit to stop calling itself “Catholic,” citing the canon.
Since Catholics for Choice flagrantly violates Church teaching, and being based in Washington D.C. which falls under the jurisdiction of Cardinal Robert McElroy, we must try put an end to their evils.

If the right to use the name “Catholic” can be taken away from organizations closer to authentic Church teaching, why are so many of our Church leaders hesitant to do the same to organizations blatantly blaspheming Our Lord and Our Lady, advocating evil, and misleading millions of people?
While removing the “Catholic” name from Catholics for Choice will certainly cause an uproar and receive great pushback, it is clear that the organization has merited such a response due to its advocacy of heretical views, especially the slaughter of unborn children, and its blatant rejection of Church teaching.
Thus we are beseeching Cardinal McElroy, as Archbishop of Washington D.C., to revoke Catholics for Choice’s ability to call themselves Catholic.
