Bishop Joseph Vasquez of the Diocese of Austin, Texas recently announced that the Traditional Latin Mass will soon be banned at St. Mary’s Cathedral in Austin.
SIGN: Tell Bishop of Austin to allow Latin Mass to return to Cathedral.
When Pope Francis’ motu proprio Traditionis Custodes was released in 2021, Bishop Vasquez issued a temporary dispensation for the Cathedral and meanwhile requested guidance from the Vatican on how to next deal with the question.
To our deep disappointment, in his letter of February 11, 2024, the Bishop announced: "Following the guidance of the Holy See, the dispensation for celebrations according to the 1962 missal at the Cathedral will come to an end on March 19, the feast of St. Joseph.”
We are therefore gathering this petition to let Bishop Vasquez know how hurt traditional Catholics are by this decision, and to encourage him to reverse it.
SIGN: Ask Bishop to restore the Traditional Latin Mass at Austin Cathedral.
The cathedral, built in the 1850s, has a rich history and is dearly loved by the people of the diocese.
The traditional Mass at St. Mary’s Cathedral has been a source of great nourishment for the Austin faithful, and so the idea that it may soon be taken away is devastating.
As Pope Benedict XVI said, “A society that considers now to be forbidden what it once perceived as the central core – that cannot be.” For many Catholics, this Mass is that central core which holds their Faith together. We must not let that be shattered.
SIGN: Tell Bishop of Austin to allow the Traditional Latin Mass to return to Cathedral.
